About gutter guards

Gutter guards cover the gutter to keep leaves and debris out while they let rain in. The common types are screens, fine metal mesh, foam inserts, and solid covers that turn water over a curved edge. Fine mesh stops the most debris. No guard stops all of it: pine needles and seeds still collect, and most guards still need a rinse now and then. Some guards slide under the first row of shingles, so ask how the installer fixes them without harm to the roof.

What to ask a contractor

  • Which type of guard do you recommend for the trees around my house, and why?
  • Will the guard go under my shingles, and could that affect my roof warranty?
  • Will you clean and repair the gutters before the guards go on?
