About gutter installation
New gutters catch the water that runs off the roof and carry it to the downspouts and away from the house. Most homes get seamless aluminum gutters, formed on site from a coil so there are no joints along each run. Steel and copper cost more and last longer. Each run must slope a little toward its downspout, and the hangers must be close enough together to carry snow and wet leaves. The gutter size and the number of downspouts decide how much rain the system can handle.
What to ask a contractor
- Are the gutters seamless, and what metal and thickness are in the quote?
- What size of gutter and downspout do you recommend for my roof, and why?
- What hangers do you use, and how far apart do they go?
- Does the price include taking down and hauling away the old gutters?
