About downspouts and drainage
Downspouts carry the water from the gutters down to the ground, and drainage carries it away from the house. A downspout that empties next to the wall puts the roof’s water against the foundation, where it can reach a basement or crawl space. Extensions, splash blocks and buried drain pipes move it a safe distance away. Larger downspouts clear water faster and clog less often. Buried pipes need a clean-out point and a slope that keeps water moving, or they fill with silt.
What to ask a contractor
- Do I have enough downspouts for the size of my roof?
- Where will the water go, and how far from the foundation?
- If you bury a pipe, where does it end, and how do I clean it out?
- Will a larger downspout help where my gutters overflow?
