About soffit and fascia

Fascia is the board along the roof edge that carries the gutter. Soffit is the panel under the overhang, and its vents let air into the attic. When a gutter overflows or leaks for years, water soaks the fascia and it rots from behind. Then the gutter sags or pulls loose. A gutter contractor can replace the rotten boards before new gutters go up. Many cover the new wood with aluminum or vinyl wrap, so it does not need paint.

What to ask a contractor

  • How much of the fascia is rotten, and how will you check behind the gutter?
  • Will you replace rotten wood, or only cover it with wrap?
  • Will the new soffit keep the attic vents open?
  • Do you take down and rehang the gutters as part of this job?
