Architectural shingles are thicker and last longer than three-tab ones, and some carry an impact rating that matters where hail is common. The underlayment, flashing and attic ventilation under the shingles decide how long the roof lasts as much as the shingles do.

What to ask a contractor

  • Do you offer an impact-rated shingle, and does my insurer give a discount for it?
  • What underlayment goes under it, and is ice and water shield included at the eaves and valleys?
  • Who gives the warranty, you or the shingle maker, and for how long?
