State license required

Roofing license requirements in Alabama

Alabama requires a state Residential Roofer license for roofing jobs over $2,500.

Who needs a license

State license required. The state issues a license for roofing work. The roofer meets the state’s rules to get it, and you can look the license up.

The Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board (HBLB) issues the Residential Roofer license. A roofer who contracts directly with a homeowner needs it when the total cost of the job exceeds $2,500 (Ala. Code 34-14A). A Residential Home Builder license from the same board also covers roofing. The roofer license needs a $10,000 bond and proof of experience, but no exam. Ask to see the HBLB license number and check it online.

Bond and insurance

A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.

Roof insurance rules in Alabama

Alabama law provides a discount on the wind part of your premium for a home with an IBHS FORTIFIED certificate; ask your insurer. If insurance will pay for your roof, you can cancel the roofing contract within ten business days of signing if your insurer tells you in writing that all or part of the claim is not covered.

Permits

Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.

How to verify a roofer's license

Ask the roofer for the license or registration number. Then look it up yourself on the state's own site, the Alabama HBLB Look Up a License. Check that the name and the status match the company you talk to.
