Who needs a license
State registration required. The state keeps a list of registered contractors. The roofer pays a fee and shows proof of insurance, but takes no trade exam.
The Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board (under the Department of Labor and Licensing) issues the Residential Roofer Registration. It is required for 'Roofing, Roof Decks, Roofing Sheet Metal' work on a single-family home when the job is more than $2,000, labor and materials included. It has no exam, and the board says a registrant 'is NOT a licensed contractor'. A contractor who holds a Residential Builders or Residential Remodelers license does not need it. Ask to see the registration or license number and check it online.
Bond and insurance
A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.
Roof insurance rules in Arkansas
The Arkansas Insurance Department lets insurers add a roof schedule to the policy for roofs 7 years or older, with notice to you. It also lets them apply a separate wind and hail deductible. Before storm season, read your declarations page for a roof schedule and your wind and hail deductible.
Permits
Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.
How to verify a roofer's license
Ask the roofer for the license or registration number. Then look it up yourself on the state's own site, the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board - Find a Licensed Contractor. Check that the name and the status match the company you talk to.
