Who needs a license
Licensed by city or county. The state does not license roofers. Your city or county may. Ask your building department what it asks of a roofer.
No state agency licenses roofers or general contractors in Colorado. Many cities and counties do. Denver, for example, requires a supervisor certificate and a city contractor license before a company can pull permits. State law (C.R.S. 6-22-101 and following) requires a roofer to give the homeowner a written contract and bars the roofer from paying the insurance deductible. Ask to see the local license or registration for the city or county where the house is.
Bond and insurance
A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.
Roof insurance rules in Colorado
If insurance will pay for your roof, you can cancel the roofing contract within 72 hours after your insurer tells you in writing that it denied the claim in whole or in part. The contractor must return your payments within ten days, less work already done. A roofer may not offer to pay, waive or rebate your deductible, and may not act as your public adjuster.
Permits
Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.
How to verify a roofer's license
Colorado has no state license lookup for roofers. Ask the roofer for proof of insurance, and call the insurer to confirm it. If your city or county licenses roofers, ask its building department how to check a license.
