State license required

Roofing license requirements in Louisiana

Louisiana requires a state license for residential roofing jobs of $7,500 or more.

Who needs a license

State license required. The state issues a license for roofing work. The roofer meets the state’s rules to get it, and you can look the license up.

The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) issues the license. Since January 1, 2026, under La. R.S. 37:2156.4 (Act 422 of 2025), anyone who bids on or performs work on a home roofing system valued at $7,500 or more must hold the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification. A Home Improvement registration alone does not cover this work. Ask to see the LSLBC license and check that it lists Residential Roofing or Residential Construction.

Bond and insurance

A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.

Roof insurance rules in Louisiana

Insurers must offer an add-on that pays to upgrade to a FORTIFIED roof when a covered claim needs a new roof, and state law allows a premium discount for a FORTIFIED roof. An IBHS FORTIFIED certificate is the only paper you need for that discount. A seller may not waive, absorb or rebate your deductible without your insurer's consent.

Permits

Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.

How to verify a roofer's license

Ask the roofer for the license or registration number. Then look it up yourself on the state's own site, the LSLBC Contractor Search. Check that the name and the status match the company you talk to.
