No state roofing license

Roofing license requirements in Maine

Maine has no state roofing license.

Who needs a license

No state roofing license. The state does not license roofers, and we found no common city or county license. Proof of insurance and a written contract matter most here.

The Maine Attorney General states that general contractors and trades such as roofing are not licensed or regulated by the state. The Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation lists no contractor or roofing license. State law does require a written contract for home construction or repair work over $3,000, with a down payment of no more than one third. Ask the roofer for that written contract and proof of insurance.

Bond and insurance

A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.

We found no Maine rule on roof insurance claims that we could confirm on the state's own pages.

Permits

Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.

How to verify a roofer's license

Maine has no state license lookup for roofers. Ask the roofer for proof of insurance, and call the insurer to confirm it. If your city or county licenses roofers, ask its building department how to check a license.
