Who needs a license
No state roofing license. The state does not license roofers, and we found no common city or county license. Proof of insurance and a written contract matter most here.
The state licenses electricians, plumbers and gas fitters through the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification, but not roofers or general contractors. The NH Department of Justice tells consumers that home contractors do not need to be licensed. Some cities keep their own contractor registrations. Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and check the insurer directly.
Bond and insurance
A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.
We found no New Hampshire rule on roof insurance claims that we could confirm on the state's own pages.
Permits
Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.
How to verify a roofer's license
New Hampshire has no state license lookup for roofers. Ask the roofer for proof of insurance, and call the insurer to confirm it. If your city or county licenses roofers, ask its building department how to check a license.
