State license required

Roofing license requirements in Utah

Utah requires a state contractor license for most roofing work.

Who needs a license

State license required. The state issues a license for roofing work. The roofer meets the state’s rules to get it, and you can look the license up.

The Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) licenses contractors. The roofing classification is S280 General Roofing Contractor. Work on a building with a contracted value under $7,000, labor and materials included, is exempt as handyman work; above $3,000 the handyman must file an insurance affirmation with DOPL. Ask for the contractor's DOPL license number and check that it carries S280 or a general building classification.

Bond and insurance

A license or registration is not insurance. Ask every roofer for a certificate of general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Then call the insurer to confirm the policy is active. If the state asks a roofer for a bond, the rules above say so.

Roof insurance rules in Utah

When repaired or replaced items do not match in color, texture or size, the insurer must repair or replace items so they look reasonably uniform. A residential contractor may not rebate or offer to rebate any part of your deductible.

Permits

Confirm roof permit requirements with the building department responsible for your address and scope of work. Agree with your contractor who will obtain any required permit and arrange inspections before work begins.

How to verify a roofer's license

Ask the roofer for the license or registration number. Then look it up yourself on the state's own site, the Utah DOPL License Verification. Check that the name and the status match the company you talk to.
