About soffit and fascia

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof that holds the gutters. The soffit is the panel under the roof overhang. Vented soffits let air into the attic, which helps keep the attic and roof dry. Rot in the fascia often comes from gutters that overflow or from a missing drip edge. Birds and animals get in through gaps in the soffit. A good repair fixes the cause of the rot, then wraps the new wood in aluminum or vinyl, or paints it.

What to ask a contractor

  • What caused the rot, and will you fix that too?
  • Will the new soffit be vented, and is my attic getting enough air?
  • Will you take the gutters down and hang them again, and is that in the price?
  • Will you wrap the fascia in metal, or paint it, and why?
