About vinyl siding
Vinyl siding is plastic panels that lock together and hang on nails. It costs less than most other siding, needs no paint, and cleans with a hose. Vinyl grows and shrinks with heat and cold, so the installer must leave the nails a little loose and leave gaps at the ends of each panel. Panels nailed too tight buckle and wave in summer. Thicker panels resist dents and sag less. Insulated vinyl has a foam backing that adds stiffness and some insulation.
What to ask a contractor
- What thickness is the panel in the quote, and why that one?
- Is insulated vinyl an option for my house, and is it worth it?
- How do you nail the panels so they can move with the heat?
- Who gives the warranty, you or the siding maker, and does fading count?
