About stucco

Stucco is a cement plaster put on the outside walls in layers, over wire lath or foam board. It is hard and lasts a long time, but water that gets behind it needs a way out at the bottom of the wall. Hairline cracks are common and often only cosmetic. Wide cracks, stains below windows and soft spots can mean water is trapped in the wall. A good repair finds the source of the water first, then patches to match the texture and color.

What to ask a contractor

  • Is this crack cosmetic, or a sign of water in the wall?
  • Will you test the wall for moisture before you quote the repair?
  • How will you match the texture and color of the existing stucco?
  • Does the repair include fixing the flashing around windows and doors?
