What HomeAdvisor does well
- Speed. One form, and HomeAdvisor sends the homeowner's request to up to four local pros who call back. Good for a homeowner who wants calls fast.
- A big network and cost data. HomeAdvisor says it has over 100,000 service professionals in over 500 categories, and it publishes a large library of cost guides.
Side by side
| Fact | HomeAdvisor | The Roofing List |
|---|---|---|
| How roofers pay | A fee for each lead. Different job sizes have different lead fees. No public price list. | One plan, a Claimed Profile at $129 a year. No lead fees. |
| Leads promised | The pro FAQ says it makes no guarantee on how many leads to expect. | None. We charge no lead fees and never sell a request. |
| Where a request goes | Up to four matched pros, who get the homeowner’s details. | One firm. The form names the recipient or explains that the request waits for a city claim. |
| Screening | A criminal database check when a pro applies. Corporate Accounts and Canadian pros are not screened. | Phone and live website, and a firm that fails comes off the list until it passes. We do not vet the work. |
| How long details are kept | Not stated on the pages we read. | A quote request is deleted after 90 days. |
HomeAdvisor and Angi
HomeAdvisor and Angi are one company. homeadvisor.com still has its own home page, but its pro site now carries the name Angi Leads, its terms are the Angi terms, and its app link opens the Angi app. Our Angi comparison covers the Angi side.
What HomeAdvisor charges roofers
The HomeAdvisor pro FAQ says a pro pays a fee for each lead it matches to, and that different sized jobs have different lead fees. It does not publish the fees. It asks pros to call for details. The pro home page says pros control their budget and lead preferences.
The FAQ says pros pay per lead, and a few lines later it says "no back-end win fees or per lead charges". That second line sits under a separate insurance directory product. Read both before you sign up.
What HomeAdvisor does with a homeowner's details
HomeAdvisor's how-it-works page says it sends the homeowner's information to the matched pros, up to four. The terms say a request gives consent to calls from up to four service professionals. The how-it-works page calls them "pre-screened". The terms say screening happens once, when the pro applies, and that Corporate Accounts and Canadian pros are not screened.
What we do differently
- A flat fee. A Claimed Profile costs $129 a year. No per-lead fee and no budget to set.
- One firm per request. The form names the recipient, or says that the request will wait for the first firm to claim the city. We keep the request for 90 days from submission, then delete it. We never sell it or send it to several firms.
- No paid placement. Payment never changes rank, which reviews show, or the rating.
- Free profiles still show the phone. A homeowner can call any listed firm direct.
For a homeowner who wants to research first, our guide explains how to browse roofers without submitting a phone number. It also explains how a direct call differs from a quote form that routes to a city's Claimed Profile or holds the request for a future claim.
We are honest about the limits. We check contact details, not the work, and we do not check licenses or insurance. A homeowner who wants several calls from one form will get that from HomeAdvisor, not from us.
