Comparison

National Roofing Directory alternative: a comparison

National Roofing Directory and The Roofing List are both roofing directories, and in one way they work alike: a quote request on a free listing can go to a paying firm. The big differences are price, what a free listing shows, and paid placement. Here is the detail, from each site's own pages.

What National Roofing Directory does well

  • A Verified checklist that money cannot buy. Its pricing page says a person works the Verified checklist, and payment never grants it.
  • A full trade publication. Storm alerts, daily news, a document library, licensing rules for 51 jurisdictions, videos and calculators give roofers and homeowners a reason to come back.
  • Many ways in for a business. A $5 trial claim, three paid tiers, supplier pricing, sponsor slots and an appointment partner.

What National Roofing Directory charges

Its pricing page lists four tiers. "Listed" is free. A claim costs $5 and includes 90 days of the Verified tier. Verified then costs $100 a month, Gold $250 a month and Platinum $1,000 a month, charged until cancelled. The page says a tier does not buy a guaranteed number of enquiries, customers or jobs. A partner also sells inspection appointments, each to one company, at a price the page does not show.

Where a quote request goes, on both sites

This is where the two sites are most alike, so we want to be clear.

On National Roofing Directory, its terms say a request made on an unverified listing goes to a verified contractor, Platinum first, then Gold.

On The Roofing List, a request made on a firm's Claimed Profile goes to that firm only. On a free profile, the form can name the Claimed Profile for the city instead of the firm whose page you opened. If a city request form says no firm has claimed there, we hold the request for up to 90 days. It can go to the first firm that claims the city, and we email you its name. We delete the request 90 days after submission, whether or not a firm received it.

On both sites, the request on a free listing can go to a paying firm. The difference on ours: the free profile still shows the firm's own phone number, so you can always call that firm direct.

Points where their own pages differ

  • Badges. The pricing page says the Verified checklist is never granted by payment. The same page gives Preferred and Editor's Choice badges, and first call on enquiries, with the $250 and $1,000 tiers.
  • Contact. The home page says to contact companies directly. The pricing page says free listings do not publish phone, email or website.
  • Claim cost. The claim page does not mention a price. The pricing page charges $5.

What we do differently

  • A yearly fee, not a monthly one. $129 a year, against $100 to $1,000 a month.
  • No paid placement and no paid badges. Free profiles and Claimed Profiles sit in the same lists, in the same order.
  • Contact details on every profile. Every listed firm passed a phone and website check, and its phone shows whether it pays or not.

We are honest about the limits. They have a Verified checklist that a person works. We check the phone and the website only, not licenses or insurance. Check a roofer's license and insurance yourself before you sign.

You can browse roofers before sharing your phone number and call the company you choose. A quote form is a separate action: read its recipient or holding notice before sending details. Our guide explains the difference.
