What it is for
Use it to price one roofing job and give the customer a clean, one-page estimate. The file has two tabs. The Estimate tab is the customer copy. The Worksheet tab is your math.
The Worksheet turns your measurements into squares, bundles, rolls and linear feet, with a waste factor. The Estimate tab pulls those quantities and your unit prices, then works out the tax, the deposit and the balance.
The file has no prices in it. You type your own.
How to use it
- Measure the roof: the area, the pitch, and the eave, rake, ridge, hip and valley lengths.
- Open the Worksheet tab. Type the measurements into the yellow cells. The waste factor starts at 10%. Use 15% for hip roofs and cut-up roofs.
- Type your unit prices and labor rates into the Worksheet. They stay blank until you fill them in.
- Open the Estimate tab. Put your company name, phone, email and license or registration number at the top. Fill in the customer and the job address.
- Write the scope in plain words. Check the quantities, the tax rate and the deposit percentage. You can overwrite any cell.
- Print the Estimate tab, or save it as a PDF, and give it to the customer. Keep the Worksheet to yourself.

Questions people ask
How do I estimate a roofing job?
Measure the roof area, the pitch and the length of each edge. Turn the area into squares, add a waste factor, and work out each material from the squares and the edge lengths. Then add labor, your unit prices, tax and the deposit. The Worksheet tab in this file does the math for you.
What is a roofing square?
A square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price and order most materials by the square. To get the squares, take the roof area with the pitch included and divide it by 100.
How much waste should I add?
The file starts at 10%. Use 15% for hip roofs and for roofs with many valleys, dormers or cuts. Change the figure to match the roof you measured.
Should I give the customer the worksheet?
No. The Estimate tab is the customer copy. The Worksheet holds your quantities, labor hours and unit prices. Print or save only the Estimate tab.
How is an estimate different from an invoice?
An estimate is the price you offer before the work. An invoice asks for payment after the work, or at each stage. When the job is done, use our roofing invoice template and put the estimate number on it.
